What is a carbon offset

A carbon offset is the act of neutralizing your own emission by buying and retiring an equivalent carbon credit generated by a project elsewhere. The offset does not reduce the original emission, it funds an equivalent reduction or removal somewhere else on the planet.

Why it matters: an offset is only defensible when it comes after a genuine attempt to cut your own emissions, not instead of one. That order is what separates a serious climate strategy from greenwashing.
