The GHG Protocol is the most widely used international standard for measuring and reporting greenhouse gas emissions, organizing the inventory into Scope 1, 2 and 3. It was developed by the World Resources Institute and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development.

Why it matters: it’s the common language that lets you compare the carbon footprint of different companies, and it’s the methodological backbone behind nearly every emissions-reporting regulation, including the CSRD.
