What it is

VM0047 credits removals from planting or regenerating trees and woody vegetation. Credits are labelled as removals.

It has two approaches. The area-based approach compares project plots with matched control plots by remote sensing (a dynamic performance benchmark) and must be used with the VMD0054 leakage module. The census-based approach covers dispersed plantings such as agroforestry, urban trees and shelterbelts.

Version 1.1 allows activities on forest land not managed for wood products and lets remote sensing estimate pre-existing woody biomass.

Version and status

• Active, version 1.1. Version 1.0 ran from 28 September 2023 to 13 May 2025.
• Deadline: projects on v1.0 had to be listed as under validation by 31 December 2025 and must request registration by 31 December 2026.
• No open consultation. Verra is not onboarding new remote-sensing data providers and plans to review applications in Q2 2027.

CCP status

CORSIA status

VM0047 is a forestry (Sectoral Scope 14) methodology and is not among the exceptions in ICAO's April 2026 document. In REDD+ countries, projects estimated above 7,000 credits a year appear to be excluded and smaller projects may be eligible. This is our reading of the ICAO text. Why it matters for Brazil

• The first credits issued anywhere under VM0047 went to a Brazilian project: Brazil Cerrado 1 (Verra ID 5511), with 230,120 credits under v1.0, announced in April 2026 (Verra announcement).
• The project spans Mato Grosso do Sul, Mato Grosso and Minas Gerais and aims to restore up to 25,000 hectares of degraded pasture, according to Verra.
