The minute
- The initial agreement is for 396 MW generated at Cape Station in Beaver County, Utah, with an option to expand by another ~600 MW by June 2030, totaling nearly 1 GW
- Cape Station is expected to deliver first power in 2026, with about 100 MW operational by early 2027
- It’s the largest enhanced geothermal (EGS) PPA ever signed globally, a milestone for the technology’s commercialization; Fervo Energy’s stock jumped 25% after the announcement
Why it matters
Google’s electricity demand rose 37% in 2025 due to AI data center expansion, yet the company still cut scope 1 and 2 emissions 2% through its clean energy purchase program — but the company itself acknowledges its “24/7 carbon-free energy” goal is getting harder to hit as AI infrastructure grows faster than the grid decarbonizes.
Enhanced geothermal (EGS) uses hydraulic fracturing to access heat from the Earth at depths where conventional geothermal doesn’t work, unlocking a clean energy source available 24 hours a day — unlike solar and wind, which depend on weather — and this deal is the strongest signal yet that large corporate buyers are betting on it at scale. via ESG Today
