The minute

  • The hub, at the Mizushima Industrial Complex (Kurashiki City, Okayama Prefecture), will capture, liquefy and ship up to 3.43 million tonnes of CO2 a year by vessel — the largest volume among Japanese CCS clusters currently in development
  • Six companies (Sumitomo Corporation, Asahi Kasei, ENEOS, JFE Steel, Mitsubishi Gas Chemical and Mitsubishi Chemical) are working together on the project’s design, backed by state agency JOGMEC
  • The project is currently in engineering design, targeting commercial operations by 2030, shipping captured CO2 by specialized vessel to storage sites in Japan or overseas

Why it matters

This project is one piece of a larger JOGMEC plan of nine CCS projects totaling roughly 20 million tonnes of annual storage capacity by 2030, supporting Japan’s target of storing 6 to 12 million tonnes of CO2 a year by then — four of the nine projects target overseas storage within the Asia-Pacific region.

Shipping captured CO2 by vessel (rather than just pipeline) is what lets Japanese industry, concentrated near the coast but short on domestic geological storage space, use reservoirs in other countries in the region as part of its 2050 carbon-neutrality strategy. via Carbon Credits
